Consistency Beats Intensity: Escaping the All-or-Nothing Mindset
We're now over halfway through our current training phase here at MARCHON Training.
For some of you, training has become a daily non-negotiable.
For others, life may have got in the way.
Work has been busy.
The kids have been off school.
You've been away for a weekend.
You've missed a few sessions.
Motivation has dipped.
And suddenly it feels like you've fallen behind.
If that sounds familiar, you're definitely not alone.
Over the last few weeks we've spoken about understanding female physiology, fuelling your body properly, building strength, and supporting your health.
But none of that matters if we let one missed workout convince us to stop altogether.
Because one of the biggest barriers to long-term progress isn't a lack of knowledge.
It's the all-or-nothing mindset.
The belief that if you can't train perfectly, eat perfectly, or stick to the plan 100%, you've somehow failed.
The reality couldn't be further from the truth.
What Does the All-or-Nothing Mindset Look Like?
It often shows up in ways we don't even realise.
You miss one workout...
...so you decide you'll start again next Monday.
You have a meal out with friends...
...so the whole weekend becomes a write-off.
Work gets hectic.
Your routine slips.
Before you know it, you've convinced yourself you've "fallen off track."
The problem isn't the missed workout.
Or the meal out.
Or the busy week.
It's believing that one imperfect moment has undone all of the work you've already put in.
The truth is:
One workout won't change your body.
But equally...
One missed workout won't either.
Why Consistency Always Wins
In my very first SHAPE article, I spoke about how every training phase is designed to build on the one before it.
No phase exists in isolation.
Every block carries over into the next.
Exactly the same is true for your training.
No single workout is responsible for your progress.
Every session is simply another opportunity to build on the one before it.
Strength isn't built in a day.
Muscle isn't built in a week.
Fitness doesn't improve from one brilliant conditioning session.
Progress comes from repeating the basics well.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Think of every workout as another brick.
One brick doesn't build a house.
But hundreds of bricks, laid consistently over time, absolutely do.
Progress Doesn't Require Perfection
One of the biggest misconceptions in fitness is that successful people are simply more motivated.
The truth?
They're usually just more consistent.
You're not going to feel motivated every time you train.
Some days you'll feel unstoppable.
Other days work has been chaotic, you've slept badly, and training is the last thing you want to do.
That's normal.
The important thing to remember is that motivation often follows action, not the other way around.
The people who make long-term progress aren't waiting until they feel motivated.
They've simply built the habit of showing up anyway.
More often than not, once you get moving, momentum takes over.
Life will never be perfectly organised.
Consistency doesn't mean perfect.
Sometimes it means completing every planned session.
Sometimes it means squeezing in 30 minutes instead of an hour.
Sometimes it means swapping a run for a walk.
Or choosing one good meal instead of writing the whole day off.
Doing something will always move you further forward than waiting for the perfect time.
Trust the Process
The SHAPE program wasn't built around extremes.
It wasn't designed to leave you exhausted or expecting perfection every single week.
It was designed to fit alongside real life.
Work.
Family.
Holidays.
Busy seasons.
The goal has never been perfection.
The goal is building habits you can repeat for years.
Because sustainable habits create sustainable results.
If you've missed a session...
Don't wait until Monday.
If you've had a weekend away...
Don't convince yourself you've undone weeks of hard work.
Just pick up where you left off.
The next workout has no idea you missed the last one.
All it asks is that you show up.
The Takeaway
If there's one thing I want you to remember from this article, it's this:
Progress isn't built during your perfect weeks.
It's built during the weeks where life gets busy and you choose to keep going anyway.
Keep laying the bricks.
Keep showing up.
Keep trusting the process.
Because when it comes to long-term health, performance and body composition...
Consistency will always beat intensity.
